None of the pieces on this tape are titled, but each side is split into two, one for each group. Side 'A' opens with a piece by THE GREY WOLVES - and a good one at that. From warm, deep rumbles, as of tube trains heard underground from a distance, rise Latin-chanting voices in looped cycles, water lapping beneath, muted bubbling electronics & strange other-world synthetics, The composition - loose & non-beat - changes gradually in grey, fascinating moodiness, containing a cold element of threat cameo'd against the overall dull grey warmth. The UTERUS o28o piece follows neatly on it's heels, rising on monk-like voices to become a sub-Greek-Folk piece set against a backdrop of strange sounds. The bouzouki-like instrument fades away, allowing strange disconnected Industrial sounds, whispered voices & moaning female cries for their freedom. From here it changes once more, becoming a slightly harsh, crashing beat structure overcast with diffuse guitar. Looped voice succeeds this composed piece, saturated in echo & washed with fading in organ. Sounds slide in & out - and flat bell-like sounds tinkle. Side 'B' opens with UTERUS o28o's second part to the 'A' side piece. bringing people like factor X & BLACKHUMOUR to mind - ie. everyday sound manipulated & looped, turned into a textural soundscape. Out of this various synthetic (and organ) sounds rise, adding to the strange, disquiet-yet-passive atmosphere which bubbles as if the spirits of objects were being distilled painfully in some black cauldron. The sound suddenly changes, becoming a much darker, larger thing - a black structure which has almost-defined shape, despite it's lack of beat or rhythm, is nevertheless a 'rhythm'. Out of this grows another almost Trad Folk piece - familiar somehow, although this is probably the nature of such things. Another, altogether more Industrial piece - presumably THE GREY WOLVES' second offering, grows out of the echoes - slow beat thing bringing DARK STAR to mind, although it is encased in a shiny metal carapace and is surrounded by floating synthetic sounds - large drifts & whisps of sound, floating along like liberated ghosts, a myriad strange sounds - some machine, some ethereal, all combining around the strict central beat. It has a static, controlled feel which might get out of hand any second. This rhythm dies away to allow monk chants liberty over a deep rumbling distant noise - a furnace heard from a distance. The incantations change, growing stranger, darker, more Satanic. Out of these Stygian passageways of sound grow strange wobbling synthetics, which finally fade away.An adventure in sound which is mostly quite quiet & pacifying, yet maintains a degree of darker, colder moodiness.Originally reviewed for Soft Watch.
